Government releases a further €68 million for electrification and construction projects

On 5th May 2024, the Estonian Ministry of Climate Change signed decrees providing an additional €68 million for the electrification of the lines managed by the network operator Eesti Raudtee in Tartu and Narva and for the reconstruction of several railway lines. Together with the funds already approved, a total of around €387 million will be invested in electrification and construction work. The measures are supposed to enable the increase of speed of passenger trains to up to 160 km/h and introduce a synchronised timetable. Of the €68 million allocated, €48 million will be used for the electrification of the Tallinn – Tartu, Tapa – Narva, and Lagedi – Muuga sections. A total of €6 million is earmarked for the straightening of curves on the Tartu – Valga section and the reconstruction of the Palupera – Keen section. A further €14 million will be provided for the reconstruction of the Kiltsi – Vägeva section and the extension of platforms and tunnels on the Tapa – Tartu section. The measures will be financed from CO2 funds.
