Government prioritises modernisation of Inlandsbanan line

In its spring budget, the Swedish government announced plans to redirect around EUR 2.8 billion (SEK 30 billion) from defence funding to the transport infrastructure between 2026 and 2034, highlighting the Inlandsbanan line as a priority railway line for modernisation. The funds come from a credit facility of EUR 27.8 billion for military and civil defence agreed by all eight parties in the Riksdag at the end of March 2026. The government has classified the railway network as critical infrastructure for civil protection, crisis preparedness and total defence, and intends to strengthen north-south and east-west connections. Measures mentioned include addressing the maintenance backlog, increasing robustness and redundancy, and expanding capacity through additional triangular tracks, more double tracks and passing loops, longer trains and higher load-bearing capacity for heavier transport. It has not yet been specified which individual measures will be implemented on the Inlandsbanan.
