As part of their fourth National Study on Urban Mobility, the Brazilian Ministry of Cities and the BNDES development bank have presented a 30-year plan for the expansion of local public transport in the country's 21 largest metropolitan areas by 2054. The plan envisages the construction of a total of 2,506 km of new lines, including 323 km of metro lines, 96 km of suburban rail lines, 1,930 km of light rail transit (LRT) lines, bus rapid transit (BRT) lines or monorail lines, as well as 157 km of bus lanes. Of 400 projects, 200 have been prioritised for detailed technical and financial analysis in the coming months. The aim is to pool investments for medium and high transport capacities and to use federal, state and local resources more efficiently. Once the projects have been implemented, at least 30% of the population in 80% of metropolitan areas should live within 1 km of a rapid transit line; the current average is 13%.
