On 26th February 2026, the Polish government, during a parliamentary committee hearing, endorsed the city of Krakow's plans to finance and implement a metro network. The Ministry of Infrastructure reaffirmed its political backing and identified EU funds as the primary source of financing. The Ministry of Finance also indicated a contribution from the central government. In October 2024, the city decided to pursue a metro network instead of partially tunneling the existing light rail transit (LRT) network. The plan envisions a 28.5 km Y-shaped line with 29 stations running from Nowa Huta through the city centre to Brozka, where it will branch off to Opatkowice and Bronowice. According to the city's road and infrastructure authority ZDM, funds for preliminary work were included in the 2026 investment plan at the end of January 2026. Following the completion of the feasibility and planning phases, the project has been in the detailed design phase since the beginning of 2026. ZDM is planning to issue a tender for the creation of technical documentation for infrastructure and vehicles later in 2026 and to launch field studies. Furthermore, the redesign of Rondo Mogilskie square will be planned to take the future metro line into account.
