On 21th August 2025, Colombian President Gustavo Petro presented plans to expand the 150 km Cerrejón railway line, which connects the largest coal mine with the port of Puerto Bolívar. The plan is to build 300 km of new infrastructure to the Santa Marta – La Dorada corridor in order to transport agricultural products in addition to coal and to offer passenger rail transport. The Fenoco and Glencore concession is to be extended to include agricultural goods, providing banana producers in Cesar and La Guajira with a direct export corridor. Transport volume fell from 50 million t to around 10 million t per year. In the future, the line is to be used as a tourism and development corridor, for which the approval of the Wayúu community is crucial.
