Government plans energy tax exemption for railway

The new Austrian government is planning to exempt the railway system from energy taxes in order to increase the competitiveness of rail transport. This measure is part of a comprehensive coalition programme to make rail freight transport more attractive. This also includes increased cooperation with Germany and Italy as well as the harmonisation of European rail transport. One focus is on the introduction of the European Train Control System (ETCS) throughout Europe and accelerating its implementation in Austria. In addition, existing federal subsidies for rail transport are to be maintained in order to promote the desired modal shift. The government is also planning to impose stricter controls on road transport and support companies in switching to rail. Further measures include the digitalisation of rail freight transport and the reduction of bureaucratic hurdles. Long-term, attractive and non-bureaucratic funding programmes are also planned to strengthen rail as a means of transport.
