The Argentine government has extended the national railway emergency by two years, thereby continuing special powers for safety-related measures in the state railway system. The regulation, which was extended by decree, first came into force in June 2024 and continues to allow safety work to be prioritised, procurement to be simplified, and budget funds to be reallocated within the state-owned operators of passenger rail and rail freight transport. The measure is justified by the poor condition of infrastructure, vehicles, and control and safety technology, as well as financial difficulties. The aim remains to ensure user and occupational safety and to maintain essential transport services. The decree does not specify a total amount for additional expenditure, but keeps flexible procurement and financing channels open for work classified as critical.
