Government considers joining CKU project

The Tajik government is considering joining the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan (CKU) railway project, which is currently under construction. China is already investing heavily in Tajikistan to promote exports, with trade between the two countries on the rise. In May 2025, Tajik exports to China rose by 122% to €36 million (US$42.2 million), while Chinese exports to Tajikistan increased by 10.5% to over €311 million. Tajikistan has a limited railway network of less than 700 km of Russian broad-gauge track, which is mainly used for rail freight transport. Connecting Tajikistan to the CKU, which is being built to standard gauge, could open up many opportunities for the Central Asian country.
