The Indian government has approved three expansion projects with a total length of 375 km and a total investment volume of €912.4 million (INR 79.3 billion). The first project involves increasing the capacity of the Manmad – Jalgaon section on the Mumbai – Prayagraj – Varanasi line, which is expected to increase rail freight transport from the ports in Maharashtra, in particular the transport of agricultural products, by 21 million t per year and save 80 million litres of diesel. The second project will expand the Bhushawal – Khandwa line and support the increase in passenger rail transport from Mumbai to the northern and eastern states of India, as well as increasing rail freight transport by 13 million t per year. The third project involves a new third track on the Prayagraj – Manikpur line, which will serve as a feeder to the 1,337 km Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), which runs from Ludhiana to Dankuni. The expansion of the line is expected to increase rail freight transport by 16 million t per year. Since June 2024, the Indian government has committed €7.46 billion for 17 new railway projects, including plans to build 1,333 km of new lines and 752 km of multi-track sections.
