The Portuguese government has approved the National Railway Plan PFN and awarded infrastructure operator IP the contract to study key projects. These include cross-border high-speed rail (HSR) lines to Spain, the electrification and gauge conversion of the 92.6 km Vouga line Aveiro – Espinho to 1,668 mm, and a direct connection between the Lisbon ring and west line. Connections from Porto to the Spanish border, from Faro to Huelva, and from Aveiro/Viseu to Salamanca are also being considered.
