On 12th June 2024, the Lithuanian government approved the infrastructure development plan for the section of the major Rail Baltica project from the Jiesia landscape reserve near Kaunas to the Polish border and started the acquisition of land for public purposes. The new double-track railway line will be built in accordance with the alternative 6A, which was approved in 2022 and is the shortest and furthest option from urban areas. The railway line will be built in new areas from Jiesia station and will bypass Marijampole, Kalvarija, and Kazlu Ruda. Around 115 new structures are planned on the line from Kaunas to the Lithuanian-Polish border, including tunnels, bridges, viaducts, wildlife crossings, and culverts. Regional railway stations are planned in Marijampole, Šeštokai, and Kazlu Ruda, which will be linked to the main line via regional connections.
