The Italian state railway FSI and the Italian civil aviation authority ENAC have signed a three-year memorandum of understanding on the use of drones to monitor rail and road infrastructure. The aim is to make structured use of drones to monitor sections of the network that are difficult to access, scan risk areas and collect real-time data. The agreement provides for the development of research projects, the testing of drone services, the planning of training courses and the definition of safety and certification procedures. A technical committee with representatives from FSI's subsidiaries will coordinate the initiatives and determine operational details. The focus will be on innovative solutions for maintenance, emergency management, passenger flow monitoring at major events, and the integration of drones into existing safety processes.
