Five cities open metro extensions

Five Chinese cities have opened metro extensions with a total length of over 100 line-km in recent weeks. On 15th December 2024, Beijing's metro network opened lines 3 and 12, as well as a 700 m extension to the Changping line. Line 12 runs 27.5 km eastwards from Sijiqingqiao to Dongbabei and is intended to relieve line 10. At Dongbabei, it meets the outer end of the new line 3, which runs from Dongsi Shitiao 14.7 km north-east via Chaoyang. Line 3 was extended by 6.4 km to the east to Caogezhuang Bei, where it now also has its own depot. On 30th November 2024, Zhengzhou opened an extension of its line 6, adding 26.4 km to the original phase of 16.7 km. On the same day, Shanghai opened a 6.6 km western extension of line 17, the first metro extension in the city in almost three years. A further extension south of Xicen is planned. On 3rd December 2024, Xuzhou opened extensions at both ends of its line 3, south to Yinshan, adding 1.6 km and one station, and north-east to Zhenxingdadao, adding 6.6 km and eight stations. The city's network now covers 72.6 line-km, but is set to grow further with the fully automated line 6, which is expected to open in September 2025.
