The Ferrocarril Lima – Ica railway project, which envisages a 280 km railway line between Lima and Ica in Peru for passenger rail transport and rail freight transport, was presented by Raúl Pérez Reyes, Minister of Transport and Communications, on 4th November. The project, which has already completed the pre-investment phase and been registered with the investment bank as feasible, is to be implemented under the Gobierno a Gobierno (G2G) modality. The estimated cost is €6.1 billion (US$6.5 billion). The line, which runs from the district of Villa El Salvador in Lima to the province of Ica, will reduce the travel time between the two cities to 2.5 hours. The project will directly benefit 5.8 million people and indirectly benefit a further 6.5 million. The railway will have two tracks, 47 km of which will be constructed as bridges and viaducts, and 32 km as tunnels. It will have 15 stations and will be electrified, enabling speeds of up to 100 km/h for freight trains and up to 200 km/h for passenger trains.
