The Brazilian Ministry of Transport is integrating the construction of the 53 km Ferroanel São Paulo into the new tender for the concession for the 1,973 km Malha Oeste railway line. The concession for the line between the Brazilian federal states of São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul is to be re-awarded in the first half of 2026, after the previous operator, Rumo, neglected the line. Planned since the 1970s, the Ferroanel is intended to divert rail freight transport out of the São Paulo metropolitan area and create capacity for passenger transport. Parts of the infrastructure were already prepared during the construction of the Rodoanel. The total cost of restoring the Malha Oeste, including Ferroanel, is estimated at around EUR 962 million (BRL 6 billion).
