Feasibility study for UAP railway project agreed

On 17th July 2025, the governments of Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan signed an agreement to conduct a feasibility study for the construction of the UAP railway line between the three countries. The planned 760 km line will run from Termiz in Uzbekistan via Hairatan in Afghanistan and on to Kabul and Logar to the Pakistani border at Kharlachi. The aim is to reduce transit times between Uzbekistan and Pakistan from 35 days to three to five days and to provide access to ports on the Arabian Sea. The project, first proposed by Uzbekistan in 2018, is intended to promote regional stability, growth and development. The cost is estimated at around €6 billion (US$7 billion). The routing of the UAP line, also known as the Trans-Afghan Railway, was agreed by the three countries in July 2023.
