The Peruvian Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) has announced the completion of the feasibility studies for the planned Lima – Ica and San Juan de Marcona – Andahuaylas railway lines and confirmed the feasibility of the two projects. The next step is now to start the technical planning and subsequent realisation. The approximately 280 km long Lima – Ica line will run from Villa el Salvador to Ica at an estimated cost of €6 billion (US$6.5 billion) and will have 15 stations, including in Punta Negra, Chincha Alta, and Pisco. The San Juan de Marcona – Andahuaylas line will connect the coastal region with the industrial areas in the southern highlands over a distance of 560 km and will have stations in the cities of Ica, Arequipa, Ayacucho, and Apurímac. The investment for the construction of the line is estimated at €7.5 billion. Both lines will be used for passenger rail transport and rail freight transport and are part of the MTC's National Railway Development Plan.
