The Spanish government, infrastructure operator Adif and the Port of Barcelona have reached an agreement to invest €816 million in the Port of Barcelona's rail and road links, which will connect the port to the TEN-T trans-European transport network. The Port of Barcelona will contribute around €200 million, while the remaining costs will be shared between Adif and the government. The investment will finance the expansion and modernisation of the rail and road infrastructure south of the Port of Barcelona along the River Llobregat. The new rail infrastructure will also be connected to an intermodal terminal in the port, for which Adif and the Port of Barcelona signed a joint management agreement in March 2024. According to media reports, construction will begin in 2027 and the first tender contracts are to be awarded in the coming weeks.
