The EU Council of Ministers has approved the construction of a European standard-gauge railway line to the Lithuanian port city of Klaipeda. This step is part of the revised TEN-T regulation. According to the Lithuanian Ministry of Transport, the railway line to Klaipeda will improve transport and logistics connections in the Baltic Sea region and Eastern Europe. It will also provide a viable alternative to road transport, promote the diversification of port activities in Lithuania and open up new markets. The line to Klaipeda will be part of the new TEN-T corridor from the Baltic Sea across the Black Sea to the Aegean Sea.
