EU awards infrastructure funding to five countries

In July 2025, the EU approved substantial grants for cross-border infrastructure projects in five countries as part of the CEF funding programme. Poland will receive around EUR 452 million for four projects, including the Polish section of the major Rail Baltica project and the introduction of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) on main lines of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). Slovakia will receive a grant worth EUR 135 million for four rail-related initiatives, including the modernisation of the Zilina – Kosice line and the upgrade of cross-border connections. Further funds will go to Romania, Ukraine and Moldova. These projects include a standard gauge connection from Poland to Lviv with funding of EUR 73.5 million as well as a north-south corridor in Romania linking the port of Constanta and Bucharest with Ukraine and Moldova. The funds will primarily support the Solidarity Lanes to maintain transport flows with Ukraine and the region. The focus is on integrating different modes of transport, closing the TEN-T gap and connecting associated neighbouring countries, particularly with regard to high-speed and military mobility. For the 2028-2034 budget period, the previous CEF funding is set to double to over EUR 51 billion for TEN-T development.
