On 15th December 2025, Belgian infrastructure manager Infrabel completed the installation of equipment in accordance with the European Train Control System (ETCS) on the main railway network. This makes Belgium the second country in the EU after Luxembourg to have a main network that is fully secured by ETCS. Since 2015, almost 6,400 km of track have been equipped at a cost of around EUR 2.8 billion, including 2,274 km with ETCS Level 2 by a consortium consisting of Siemens Mobility and Equans. The ETCS programme followed the train accident in Buizingen in 2010. Belgium initially introduced TBL1+ as an ETCS-compatible interim solution. According to Infrabel, red light violations have halved since 2010. Since the introduction of ETCS, there has been no risk of collision. The entire vehicle fleet is to be ETCS-compatible by December 2027. This will reduce the residual risk by a factor of 16 compared to 2010.
