Ericsson starts 5G railway radio tests at PKP

Network equipment provider Ericsson, together with partners, has signed a declaration of intent to carry out 5G railway radio tests at Polish state railway PKP. The project, which will run for two years, will begin in 2024 on a test track at the Railway Institute in Zmigrod. The new 5G standard, Future Railway Mobile Communications System (FRMCS), is expected to be fully developed by 2027, with the first commercial implementations starting in 2028. The agreement for the test run expands on a memorandum of understanding already signed in September 2023 between Ericsson, NetWorks, the Polish Railway Institute and Alstom.
