Infrastructure operator Adif AV will complete the electrification of an additional 34.7 km of overhead line on the high-speed rail (HSR) line in Extremadura on 10th September 2024. The two sections that have been electrified are located between Badajoz station and the Portuguese border, as well as on the future Mérida bypass line. This completes the electrification work on the Plasencia – Cáceres – Mérida – Badajoz – Portuguese border HSR line, connecting a total of 230 km to the corridor. The electrification is based on an alternating current system with 2x25 kV and a frequency of 50 Hz. The line is supplied with electricity via traction substations. In addition to electrification, progress is also being made with the introduction of the European train control system ERTMS on the section between Plasencia and Badajoz, which has already been put into operation and electrified. In addition, the construction work on the branch line to Plasencia has already been commissioned and the renovation of tracks, platforms, and other elements of the railway stations of Aljucén, Badajoz, Mérida, and Cáceres has been completed. The measures to complete the HSR line in Extremadura are co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
