EIB loans €430 million to Adif AV for HSR line in Basque Country

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is providing a €430 million loan to Spanish railway infrastructure manager Adif Alta Velocidad (AV) for the construction of the "Basque Y" high-speed rail (HSR) line between the cities of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Bilbao and San Sebastián. Once completed, the 182 km HSR line will connect the Madrid – Valladolid – Burgos HSR line via Vitoria-Gasteiz  and run to the French border via Bilbao-Donostia and San Sebastián as part of the Atlantic Corridor of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). The EIB financing is the final instalment of a €1.03 billion loan approved in 2017 which was increased to €1.43 billion in 2021. Since 2012, the EIB has thus provided a total of €2.83 billion for the construction of the Basque Y.
