EIB finances Burgos – Vitoria-Gasteiz HSR line with EUR 1.7 billion

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has approved EUR 1.7 billion in financing for the construction of the Burgos – Vitoria-Gasteiz high-speed rail (HSR) line in Spain. The first tranche of EUR 325 million will be signed in the coming days. The project is part of the TEN-T Atlantic Corridor and connects Madrid, Valladolid, and Burgos with the Basque Country and onward to the French border. The new 93 km line will be directly connected to the Basque Y network, which is also financed by EIB. The project also includes the Olmedo bypass, which will provide connections between Madrid and Valladolid as well as between Madrid and Galicia. Once completed, the Madrid – Basque Country line is expected to carry up to 5.5 million passengers per year. This financing increases the EIB's commitment to Spain's HSR network to over EUR 14 billion.
