Estonian infrastructure operator Eesti Raudtee has signed a contract worth €8.9 million with Leonhard Weiss to modernise the Kiltsi – Rakke – Vägeva section of the Tartu line. The aim is to increase the speed of passenger trains on the line to 160 km/h. The section currently uses outdated concrete sleepers and rails that do not allow speeds above 140 km/h. As part of the work, 17.6 km of rails and sleepers will be replaced and level crossings modernised. New 100 m platforms with weatherproof waiting areas will be built at the Kiltsi and Rakke stations. The main work is scheduled for 2025, with completion in November 2026. The project is state-funded through revenues from carbon trading to support environmentally friendly infrastructure improvements.
