Eesti Raudtee finalises schedule for electrification of Tartu – Tapa line

Estonian infrastructure manager Eesti Raudtee has confirmed the revised schedule for the electrification and conversion of the Tartu – Tarpa line. By 2026, electric multiple units (EMU) will be running on this line at speeds of up to 160 km/h. There have been delays due to additional operational and safety requirements, including minimising restrictions on scheduled passenger rail transport. Important milestones include the completion of the infrastructure required for electric operation by September 2025 and the completion of upgrades to the safety systems by summer 2026. A total of €286 million will be invested in electrification, €110 million in safety systems, €97 million in line upgrades and €7 million in service automation. The project is being financed by the European Union, the Estonian government and the infrastructure operator Eesti Raudtee.
