On 24th June 2024, the European Commission (EC) approved funding of over €110 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for the modernisation of the high-speed rail (HSR) line between Madrid and Seville in Spain. The financial support will be used to modernise 435.2 km of the 471 km of railway infrastructure. The goal is to ensure that the line meets European interoperability standards for rail transport and the requirements of the TEN-T trans-European transport network. As part of the modernisation work, obsolete rails will be replaced, bridges and tunnels modernised, and drainage systems adapted. In addition, the buildings and facilities required to operate the line will be modernised and the access roads improved.
