Council of Ministers approves tender for Antequera – Granada double-track expansion

On 16th December 2025, the Spanish Council of Ministers authorised the Ministry of Transport to launch a EUR 45.7 million tender via infrastructure operator Adif AV for the double-track expansion of the 46 km high-speed rail (HSR) line between Antequera and Granada. The construction of a new line running parallel to the existing standard gauge line affects the sections Bif Archidona – Bif Riofrío and the area between the Íllora technical facility and Bif La Chana. The subgrade already designed for double track will be used in each case. The measure supplements ongoing or already awarded contracts, including electrification systems for EUR 17.5 million, switches for EUR 3.4 million, around 220,000 t of ballast for EUR 8.5 million, and over 80,000 sleepers for EUR 9.6 million. This will create double track on around two thirds of the HSR line, in addition to the existing 9.5 km double-track section between Antequera and the Archidona viaduct, the 19.1 km Loja bypass and the planned double-track preparation between the Loja bypass and Íllora. The projects can be co-financed from ERDF funds.
