The Swedish transport authority Trafikverket has put the additional costs for the construction of the Norrbotniabanan in Sweden at at least €180 million (SEK 2 billion). Originally, the work on the 270 km long railway line between Umeå and Luleå was estimated to cost €3.5 billion. The additional costs are the result of an increased contingency reserve and the decision to include more double-track sections. Work is currently underway on the 12 km Umeå – Dåva section. Once this has been completed, work between Dåva and Skellefteå and the planning of the Skellefteå – Luleå section will begin, with construction scheduled to start in 2030. Passenger transport between Umeå and Skellefteå is scheduled to start in 2023.
