On 24th March 2026, the European alliance CorREDores.eu advocated for the inclusion of a central Pyrenees railway crossing project in the next long-term EU transport budget in the European Parliament. The plan envisions a third cross-border railway link between Spain and France through the central Pyrenees via a base tunnel. According to the alliance, rail transport between the Iberian Peninsula and the remainder of Europe currently depends on the Atlantic and Mediterranean Corridors, lacking alternative lines in case of disruptions. The project would complete the corridor from Algeciras or Sines via Madrid and Zaragoza to Toulouse, creating a direct connection to Central and Northern Europe. CorREDores.eu is not demanding an immediate construction decision. The alliance advocated for the project to first be eligible for EU-cofinanced studies on technical issues, routing planning, and feasibility. Prior to the hearing, representatives of the organisation held discussions with several Members of the European Parliament to highlight the cross-border and strategic importance of the project.
