Construction of Rail Baltica started in Latvia

Construction of the Rail Baltica high-speed rail (HSR) line in Latvia began on 21st May 2024. The joint venture (JV) ERB Rail JV, consisting of the engineering and construction companies Eiffage Genie Civil, Budimex, and Rizzani de Eccher, will oversee the construction of the line. Construction will be carried out in phases, starting with the first works in the Bauska region near Iecava, where Rail Baltica's future maintenance facility will be located. These maintenance points will serve as logistical bases during the construction of Rail Baltica and facilitate the construction of connections to the existing network. The Latvian section of the Rail Baltica HSR line is approximately 230 km long and includes 175 engineering structures, 11 animal crossings, 42 viaducts, 81 road bridges, and 32 railway bridges. This year, 150 km will be under construction. The construction works for Rail Baltica's main line include embankments, road crossings, superstructure and substructure, including tracks and other associated infrastructure. The total cost is estimated at around €3.7 billion.
