Turkish officials have announced the construction of a 200 km double-track railway line along the Black Sea coast through the towns of Kocaali, Akcakoca, Alapli, Eregli, Caycuma, and Bartin. The line is supposed to relieve rail transport through the Bosporus strait and to increase the capacity of rail freight transport of iron ore, coal, as well as iron and steel products from the local coal, iron, and steel industries in Eregli and Karabük. The line, which is designed as a continuation of the 65 km Adapazari – Karasu Port line currently under construction, will be connected to the Karabük – Zonguldak and Ankara – Istanbul lines.
