CIPESS approves final design for bridge over Strait of Messina

On 6th August 2025, the Italian government's Interministerial Committee for Economic Planning and Sustainable Development (CIPESS) approved the final design for the bridge over the Strait of Messina. The project is based on comprehensive documentation from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) and the involvement of the Stretto di Messina company. The plan is for a suspension bridge with a span of 3.3 km for road and rail transport. The total investment of around €13.5 billion is secured by a financing plan until the expiry of the concession in 2062. Construction work will be prepared in three phases starting at the end of 2025 and implemented from 2026, with completion scheduled for 2032. Contracts with general contractor Eurolink (Webuild), Parsons (project management), Edison Next Environment (environmental monitoring) and Marsh (insurance) will come into force when the CIPESS decision takes effect.
