CFR awards modernisation contract for Bucharest – Giurgiu line to Railworks JV

Romanian state railway CFR have selected Railworks, a joint venture (JV) of Arcada and Alstom, as preferred bidder for a contract to modernise the line between Bucharest North and Giurgiu North via Jilava. The contract is worth €462.2 million (RON 2.3 billion) and covers the modernization of the 93.5 km line, including electrification and installation of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). Railworks has bid €421 million for the work, which is to be completed within three years. Funding is being provided by the government and the EU from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). Other bidders were FCC Construcción, a JV of Porr Construct and IMSAT, as well as a JV of Zue, Con-A Operations, and UTI Construction and Facility Management. The line offers international connections for the Rhine-Danube corridor across the border with Bulgaria.
