CFR and CFM agree on cooperation for cross-border transport

The Romanian and Moldovan state railways CFR and CFM have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in cross-border rail transport. The agreement covers the electrification of the Iași – Chișinău line, the modernisation of customs facilities in Ungheni, Moldova, and the resumption of passenger rail transport on the Cahul – Galați line. In addition, there are plans to reopen the Fălciu – Prut (Cantemir) line across the river of the same name, with the Zorleni – Fălciu – Moldovan border section on the Romanian side already put back into operation in March 2022 to support the transport of Ukrainian refugees. Renovation work on the bridge, which has been closed since 1992, is already underway, and on the Moldovan side, CFM will renovate the 1.8 km section to Prut station by August 2025.
