The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (Tazara) is set to enter into a 30-year public-private partnership (PPP) agreement with China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) to revitalize the infrastructure and operation of the 1,067 mm gauge line from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to Kapiri-Mposhi in Zambia. Negotiations are still ongoing. An official statement will be published once negotiations have been completed. CCECC is planning to invest over €1.3 billion (US$1.4 billion), of which €900 million will go towards the complete rehabilitation of infrastructure to improve safety, efficiency and capacity. A further €368.4 million will be invested in the procurement of 32 new locomotives and 762 new wagons to increase rail freight and passenger rail transport capacity. The first three years of the concession will be dedicated to line renovation and construction, while the remaining 27 years will be dedicated to operating the line. CCECC will pay an undisclosed concession fee, which will be covered by operating revenues.
