The majority of the investment, €2.7 billion, is earmarked for maintenance projects to ensure the reliability of the infrastructure. Plans include the replacement and upgrading of railway components, the resurfacing or undermining of 18,350 km of track, and the replacement of 2.5 million sleepers and 660 km of rails. A further €513.2 million has been earmarked for expansion and efficiency projects to increase network capacity and support customer requirements. Key projects include the expansion of the intermodal terminal in Cicero, Chicago, and the development of the Barstow International Gateway in California.
