BNSF announces EUR 3 billion investment programme for 2026

US Class I railway company BNSF has announced investments of around EUR 3 billion (USD 3.6 billion) for 2026 to modernise its railway infrastructure, expand capacity, and improve network reliability. Of these funds, EUR 2.4 billion is earmarked for the renewal and maintenance of existing facilities. This includes work on around 20,000 km of track, including the replacement of about 2.5 million sleepers and more than 640 km of rails. BNSF has allocated EUR 303 million for measures to increase network efficiency, a figure that compares to over EUR 2.2 billion spent on such measures in the past five years. Priority projects include the construction of intermodal transport terminals, more specifically one at Barstow International in California and another near Phoenix, Arizona, as well as capacity increases at marshalling yards in Galesburg, Illinois, and Winslow, Arizona. The investment plan for 2025 was worth EUR 3.6 billion.
