The Basque Country's sustainable mobility plan envisages investments totalling approximately EUR 582 million over the next decade in rail transport and the expansion and modernisation of infrastructure. In 2026, the Directorate for Sustainable Mobility Strategy will have a budget of EUR 250.4 million available, earmarked for fare integration and municipal mobility initiatives. Around EUR 130 million will be allocated to the services of Basque railway company Euskotren, and a further EUR 92.8 million to the recently acquired regional passenger rail transport services of Spanish state railway Renfe. An additional EUR 44.4 million is earmarked for the renewal and procurement of trains and light rail vehicles (LRV), and EUR 19.5 million for accessibility improvements and service enhancements. The strategy also includes the implementation of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), starting in Gipuzkoa. A total of EUR 259.5 million will be provided in 2026 for the expansion, planning and maintenance of the railway infrastructure through the mobility strategy.
