Balfour Beatty tests hydrogen-carbon cleaning on tamping machine

Balfour Beatty has completed a one-year field trial of carbon cleaning for engines on a compact tamping machine from Plasser & Theurer and is now planning to roll out the technology across its entire fleet of tamping machines. The ECC On-Demand hydrogen system from Advanced Hydrogen Technologies was used for this trial. This system feeds hydrogen into the air intake to remove carbon deposits. According to the company, this improves efficiency and reduces CO₂, CO, NOx and N₂O emissions.
