Baku plans construction of five LRT lines by 2030

The Azerbaijani Ministry of Transport has presented plans for a five-line light rail transit (LRT) network in Baku to supplement the suburban rail and metro networks and improve connections between the suburbs and the city centre. A line from Mehdiabad (Absheron) to 28 May in the city centre has been specified as the backbone of the network. To this end, a new station, M Rasulzada, is planned between Bilajari and 28 May on the existing suburban rail corridor as a transfer point to the LRT network. A transfer to the metro network is also planned at the Azadliq Prospekt station. Further lines are to connect Bilajari/Binagadi with the city centre, Sabunchu/Bakikhanov with the Koroglu metro station, Bayil/Badamdar with the Sahil metro station and the waterfront promenade, and integrate Heydar Aliyev Airport, coordinated with a planned airport metro line. Three depots are also planned. A planning company is to complete the detailed planning in 2026 to enable construction tenders to be issued. Completion is scheduled for 2030.
