AKN receives €100 million for infrastructure expansion

The railway transport and infrastructure company AKN Eisenbahn GmbH is receiving a grant of €100 million from the state of Schleswig-Holstein for the expansion of its infrastructure. Most of the funds will be used for the electrification and double-tracking of the S21 suburban rail (S-Bahn) line. Once the line has been upgraded, passengers will be able to travel from Kaltenkirchen via Eidelstedt to Hamburg's main railway station without changing trains. In addition to the expansion of the S21 line, further infrastructure projects are planned at AKN. These include the reconstruction of Fehmarn-Burg station for the connection to the Fehmarn Belt Tunnel, the extension of the Kiel – Schönberger Strand line to open in 2025 and the reactivation of the Rendsburg – Seemühlen Nord line near Fockbek. These construction projects worth €177 million are to receive €155 million in subsidies from the state and federal governments.
