Spanish network operator Adif can now put out a call for bids for the planning of the renewal of 13 sections of the existing network, with an estimated value of EUR 16.8 million, after the Spanish Cabinet approved the investment. The projects on the standard-gauge and metre-gauge networks cover a total of 405.5 km of track, or 607.5 km when counting double tracks. The plan calls for the renewal of the track structure as well as, where necessary, selective work on cuttings, embankments and drainage. The sections to be modernised include Cortes de Navarra – Casetas and Casetas – Zaragoza on the Bilbao – Casetas line, San Juan de Mozarrifar – Almudévar on the Madrid – Barcelona line, several sections of the Zaragoza Miraflores – Sant Vicenç de Calders connection via Reus and Tarragona, the Massanes – Girona and Vilamalla – Figueres corridors, Almansa – La Encina, Santa María de la Alameda – Ávila, and Vallecas – Vallecas Industrial. On the metre-gauge network, the sections in question are Oviedo – Arriondas and Arriondas – Unquera. Some lines are also designated for intermodal transport via rolling motorway services.
