Spanish infrastructure operator Adif has so far mobilised almost €210 million in investments for the modernisation of the 180 km Zafra – Huelva line with the Iberian gauge of 1,668 mm. The measures are aimed at increasing the reliability, regularity, and speed of transport services on the line, which links the provinces of Huelva and Badajoz. As part of the measures, five bridges in the province of Huelva were structurally reinforced and cross drainage work was carried out in Badajoz and Huelva. The comprehensive modernisation of the infrastructure and tracks was tackled in five sections with a total length of 90.5 km. These measures will remove up to 14 speed restrictions on the line, resulting in improved journey times. In the area of traffic control, signalling, and telecommunications systems, the implementation of the Automatic Clearance Block on single track (BLAU) is being carried out, which is operated by the Centralised Traffic Control (CTC) of the Traffic Regulation Centre (CRC) in Seville and will replace the telephone block.
