Adif awarded contract for upgrade of San Isidro – Alicante line to standard gauge

Spanish infrastructure manager Adif has awarded a joint venture (JV) of WSP Spain and Meta Engineering the contract for the introduction of standard gauge on the San Isidro – Alicante section of the Mediterranean Corridor and the connection of the Matola high-speed rail (HSR) station to the city centre of Elche. The contract, worth around €5.1 million, includes design work and the construction of the platform, track and energy infrastructure. The plan is to develop the Matola station into a hub by connecting it to Elche's suburban rail network, enabling direct transfer to the AVE HSR service. Other measures include the removal of level crossings at Torrellano and an increase in rail freight transport capacity near Elche. Tenders for the construction work beyond that of WSP Spain and Meta Engineering are expected to be awarded in 2028.
