Kenya proposes network to connect Indian and Atlantic Oceans

According to local media reports, the Kenyan government has started conversations with Uganda, DR Congo and the Republic of the Congo to build a standard-gauge railway (SGR) line connecting the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic. Conversations are aimed at each of the four countries building a 1,000 km network across its territory. The Tanzanian government has also recently reached a deal with Chinese contractors to extend its SGR line section to Burundi, which will subsequently connect to the DR Congo. Kenya’s existing 700 km SGR network runs between Mombasa and Suswa near Naivasha, and was built by Chinese contractors for an estimated cost of €3.5 billion (US$3.75 billion).
