On 20th December 2022, a consortium of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) signed a contract worth €2.1 billion (US$2.2 billion) with the state of Tanzania for the construction of the 506 km Tabora – Kigoma railway line. The standard-gauge line will have a 411 km main line and 95 km of branch lines with ten stations and two rail freight transport yards. Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026.
