ADB grants €287 million to rehabilite Kampala – Malaba metre-gauge line

The African Development Bank (ADB) will provide around €287 million ($301 million) for the rehabilitation of Uganda's 265 km Kampala – Malaba metre-gauge rail line. The project also includes training for railway staff and measures to improve climate resilience, such as planting trees along the infrastructure. The project aims to improve rail services and rail freight transport in the region. Due to the current state of the rail infrastructure, only 7% of freight is transported by rail and 90% by road. In May 2021, the Ugandan Parliament approved the government's borrowing for the modernisation of the line.
